Natural Egg Dyeing

We all love egg dyeing around Easter time, or at least, the little people in our lives do! It is a fun, colorful and festive holiday tradition. But, we think it’s even better making the dye with natural ingredients from your kitchen rather than using the store bought egg dyeing kits.

There are many natural ingredients that can get you the fun Easter colors you want for your eggs, but here are just a few that we’ve tried and enjoyed the most…..

BLUE-GRAY = Blueberries

  • Heat 1 cup blueberries in 1 cup water. Allow to simmer until water begins to change color. Remove blueberries and add 1 Tbsp vinegar.

RED = Pomegranate Juice

  • Mix 1 cup pomegranate juice with 1 Tbsp vinegar

PINK = Beets

  • Peel & cut 1 medium beet into chunks and add to 4 cups boiling water. Add 2 Tbsp vinegar and let it cool to room temperature. Remove beets.

YELLOW = Turmeric

  • Combine 2 Tbsp turmeric with 1 cup boiling water and add 2 tsp white vinegar

When dying the eggs, remember that the longer you soak them, the stronger the colors will be.  Once you remove the eggs from dye, you can also dab them with a sponge to get a textured look as desired. Natural dyes tend to give a matte finish, so if you really want them to be glossy, rub them with a little oil after the dye has mostly dried and they will shine!
