New Year, Same Me?

January first is upon us and while I’m still catching my breath from the whirlwind of the holidays- gyms, instagram algorithms, streaming ads, (and more) are all gearing up to sell us a better version of ourselves. Whether it be a new diet, a trendy detox tool, or a “life changing” fitness plan, remember: you are no different on January 1st than you were on December 31st. While marketing departments for seemingly every major brand have a heyday with selling transformation, bring a healthy dose of awareness to everything you’re seeing and hearing and remember, the best guide to your own wellbeing is actually- You!

While it can be fun to envision ourselves entirely different in some way, it is somewhat of a relief to know that there is no mandatory reinvention required to enter a “new year.” Rather than focusing on areas of lack, first applaud yourself in what you are doing well. When we think about the things we are winning at already, it gives us the confidence to broaden our scope of what we believe to be possible. I think the start of a new year brings with it a wonderful opportunity to check in- with yourself, with the version of yourself from one year ago, and with the vision you have for yourself one year from now. It may be daunting to set specific goals- especially with so many variables that are unpredictable- but what if you just think of something you’d like to let go of for this week. My own goal is to head into the new year with an openness and willingness to walk the path as it unfolds before me. For me, setting specific goals can lead to feelings of inadequacy if and when I don’t meet them. Sometimes the abandonment of one goal can actually look like focusing energy into an entirely different project, one you may not have even known about when your goals were set. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you do make goals and if you are the type of person who can’t not complete a goal once it’s set... maybe this year, give yourself permission to veer off course. It can be in the most unexpected circumstances that we achieve the most growth!

My new year’s hope for the community is that people begin to believe in themselves, in their unique dreams and capabilities. So much positive change can occur at the grassroots levels from passionate individuals. Sometimes we get caught up in the limiting belief that someone else could do x,y, or z (fill in the blank for yourself) better. I recently read, you only need to believe that you can do something at least 51% to do it. Can you think of something in life that you desire to do but have been putting off because you don’t think you can? Do you think you can do it at least 51%?

Another recurring theme for me in the last year, that I want to continue to bring into 2025 is the mantra “let them say no.” Sometimes we get so caught up in the possibility of a negative outcome, we don’t even give ourselves the opportunity to be turned down. By releasing the negative association of receiving a “no,” we can enable a freedom in ourselves to try for nearly anything we can imagine. Because, if the worst thing that could happen is to receive a “no,” what do we have to lose?

As you explore your own intentions for 2025, remember that it is an ongoing endeavor, one most fruitful when considered all year round, in bite-sized portions. Who knows, with a little bit of intention every day, you may just look back and realize you’ve gone through that transformation, the one “they” tried to sell you, except the only one receiving the credit, is: you!
